2012 nissan sentra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and quick. introductionthe nissan sentra compact is bigger inside than it looks outside. Inside is a roomy interior. The spacious cabin is finished like that of a more expensive car and it has comfortable and supportive seats. There's a 60/40-split rear seat that folds flat, opening up the trunk space and creating a large flat cargo area that's handy for hauling long items. the sentra is fun to drive, with a level of performance and handling that's a pleasant surprise in a compact sedan. The se-r spec v has a turbocharged version of the 2. 5-liter engine boosted to 200 hp and fitted with a 6-speed manual. Sentra se-r models also feature suspension modifications for sharper handling. Even though they offer higher levels of power and handling, we found them easy to live with. Se-r spec v is rated 21/28 mpg. the 2012 sentra is unchanged. The current-generation sentra was launched as a 2007 model and benefited from a moderate facelift for 2010. the nissan sentra represents a solid value. It's roomy inside, the engine is modern and competitive, and the chassis provides good handling and a comfortable ride. We like the continuously variable transmission. The cvt version also sports an se-r style rear spoiler. sentra 2. 0 s 17,990) adds a height adjustment for the driver's seat, power exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, illuminated steering wheel audio controls, a six-speaker sound system with rds and mp3 capability plus ipod interface, vehicle information display, upgraded security system, and p205/55hr16 tires. New for 2012 is the technology package 650), which adds touch-screen navigation, xm satellite radio with navtraffic (subscription sold separately), and a usb port. sentra 2. 0 sr 17,990) is equipped identically to the 2. 0 s, but has a sportier appearance borrowed from the performance-oriented se-r, with a mesh grille, unique front and rear fascia treatments, side sill spoilers, smoked headlights and taillights, driving lights, exhaust tip, sr badging on the rear deck, and aluminum alloy wheels. Options include touch-screen navigation 400), leather seats with front-seat heaters 900), and a new special value package 990) that combines the moonroof, navigation, xm navtraffic, rearview monitor, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, and a cargo net and hooks. Optional is a spec v upgrade package 2,600), which is identical to the se-r upgrade package except that it also includes a helical limited-slip differential. accessories available on all models include floor mats 120), auto-dimming inside mirror 130), splash guards 150), and interior accent lighting 240). safety equipment includes dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, active front-seat headrests, and a tire-pressure monitor. Antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), vehicle dynamic control (vdc), and traction control are standard on all models as well. walkaroundthe nissan sentra is larger than the subcompact versa and smaller than the midsize altima. From every angle, it looks like the latest-generation nissans. With its crisp character lines, the sentra resembles a scaled down altima. We like the new front end; it manages to look both cleaner and richer and more upscale, all at once. The previous look was sort of angular, with the fog lamps in sharp-edged openings and what seemed like a lot of cuts and creases, but the new front end is smoother. The grille opening looks like that of a more expensive car, and the integration of the grille, lower air intake, headlamps and fog lamps is much cleaner and less busy. the new look also works well with the short overhangs, which give the sentra a sporty, assertive appearance. along the sides, only widened bodywork around the wheels breaks up the clean, attractive doors and quarter panels. A character line rises from the front door back to a tall trunk, giving the sentra a bit of a rake. For example, the locking glovebox is deep enough to hold a laptop computer. There is also an available integrated removable cd holder on the headliner above the driver's sun visor. The front of the center console has a tray for items such as cell phones, as well as two cupholders that are adjustable for 20-ounce bottles or 32-ounce mega cups. Pockets with see-through netting are provided on the backs of the front seats for passengers' cell phones and ipods. the sentra's interior volume measures 97. 4 cubic feet, more than many of its competitors. The trunk measures 13. 1 cubic feet (12. 0 cubic feet for the se-r spec v). To increase cargo space, the 60/40 split rear seat can be folded flat, to open up the space into the trunk (due to a structural bulkhead, the se-r spec v lacks the folding seat). There's no problem fitting a bicycle or maybe two back there, through the trunk; two friendly people could even sleep back there. we've spent time with a bare-bones sentra 2. 0 with cloth seats, a fully equipped 2. 0 sl with leather, and a se-r spec v with its sport seats. The se-r's sport seats are better bolstered and have a grippy fabric to keep the driver in place during enthusiastic cornering. The honda of suvs. introductionthe pilot is the honda of sport-utilities, and its strengths should please anyone shopping for a mid-size suv. It delivers efficiency in packaging and operation, first-rate build quality and honda's reputation for reliability and durability. The pilot packs eight seats into an overall package so short that the epa considers it a compact suv. Yet its competition is the world's midsize suvs. It also delivers class-leading epa mileage ratings. in the pilot's second full model year, honda has already begun expanding on its impressive flexibility. The second-row seat is now adjustable fore and aft, and its slide feature has more travel for easier access to the three-place third-row seat. 2004 models ordered with the leather interior come with heated front seats and side mirrors. lineupall pilots come with all-wheel drive, a v6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission. Two models are available: lx 27,100) and ex 29,470). all models are well equipped. Standard equipment on the pilot lx includes air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, am/fm stereo, in-dash cd player, front-passenger frontal and side-impact airbags, abs, power windows, mirrors and door locks, and a rear wiper. the ex raises the ante with aluminum alloy wheels, body-colored molding, door handles and exterior mirrors, a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, synchronized front and rear automatic climate control, an outside temperature indicator, homelink garage-door remote and a more powerful seven-speaker stereo with that adds a cassette and steering-wheel controls. as usual, honda keeps it simple, by offering a limited number of options in three packages. In fact, the company prices pilots as separate models with the packages; we'll list them by what it will cost beyond the price of the ex, which brings us to another familiar practice. The option packages for the ex include leather interior 1,400) with heated front seats and side mirrors. The entertainment package 2,900) includes the leather package and rear-seat dvd video system. The navigation package 3400) adds leather and a satellite-linked guidance system. There are also a number of factory-approved, dealer-installed options, including a towing package and brush guards. compared to 2003, pilot prices reflect a modest increase of $200 for each model. Yet honda's pricing policy has its drawbacks. The grille and headlights are a careful enlargement of the cr-v's fluid wraparound face. the wheel arches are aggressive enough to offset any impression that this is a toy truck, but subtle enough to be consistent with the pilot's likely hangouts in upscale neighborhoods and suburban mall parking lots. Large honda badges on the grille and liftgate make it clear that the company is proud of the pilot, and expects customers to feel the same way. the pilot looks smaller than it is. Its styling belies the cavernous space inside. honda has limited the amount of matte-black plastic bodywork that seems to be increasingly popular on sport-utilities, and we appreciate that. Body-colored moldings give the pilot ex a more refined, upscale look. The pilot's only nod to this allegedly rugged suvness is the step on the rear bumper (a good thing) and rubberized plastic guards under both bumpers. On the other hand, few suvs offer seating for eight. Those that offer seven don't often include the rear seats as standard equipment, and many mid-size suvs don't offer the extra seating at all. moreover, the pilot's seating/cargo arrangements are exceptionally versatile. Both rows of rear seats split 60/40 to fold, for a mix of people and stuff that suits the moment. the second- and third-row seats are slightly higher than those ahead, theater style, improving forward visibility for passengers. The second-row seatbacks recline, albeit with limited range, and this year the second row can slide forward or backward in its locked position, allowing leg room for the second and third rows to be adjusted according to the size of the passengers. The pass-through to the third seat, already one of the easiest going, has also been improved. With one motion, a lever on the seat edge allows the second seatback to pivot forward while the entire seat slides forward (further than before). The seat returns to its original position by pushing on the seat back. the second seat folds away easily with one lever accessed through the rear passenger doors. That's considerably more than the gmc envoy or chevy trailblazer (80. 1 cubic feet), ford explorer (81. 3) or toyota highlander (81. 4). The lx model's manual seat adjustments are simple but effective. in a particularly clever move, honda made the largest dial in the center of the instrument panel a switch to shift the audio controls from front- to rear-seat audio. The other instruments and controls will be familiar to anyone who has driven a honda. Most of the pilot's switches operate with a satisfying, positive action. all is not perfect inside the pilot, however. The minivan-like column shifter is spindly and moves in an ovoid path, like that of the odyssey. Buttresses on the sides of the center console look like they'll collect detritus. The fold-out cell-phone holder with a power outlet seems at first a nice feature, but blocks the two cupholders in front of it. A covered compartment located below the pilot's center stack provides more storage in the space between the console and the instrument panel. the pilot is loaded with kid-friendly stuff. There's a cupholder for every seat and pockets on the seatbacks in the first two rows. The ex includes a second-row fold-down activity tray with more cupholders and storage for pocket-sized electronic games or fast food, including a little spot that cradles sau. driving impressionthe honda pilot shares its platform with the acura mdx sport-utility and odyssey minivan, both highly successful vehicles. Like the mdx and odyssey, the pilot is a joy in daily use. The pilot's road manners seem just a little better than necessary to compete in this class. Pilot was developed primarily for highways and city streets, though its ground clearance, suspension travel and standard tires are fine for light off-highway duty. the 240-horsepower 3. 5-liter v6 is more than adequate to propel the pilot, which weighs in at 4400 pounds. Acceleration is excellent, particularly in the 30-60 mph range that matters most in daily use. The pilot outguns the v6-powered toyota highlander by 20 horsepower. More important, the engine produces 245 pounds-feet of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. That compares to 222 pounds-feet at 4400 rpm for the v6 highlander. Gm's midsize suvs, the chevrolet trailblazer, gmc envoy and oldsmobile bravada, offer a 4. 2-liter straight-six producing 270 horsepower and 275 pounds-feet of torque, but those truck-based sport-utilities are about 200 pounds heavier than the pilot. And they don't have five-speed automatic transmissions. the pilot's transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, even under hard acceleration. Swoopy coupe gets more standard equipment. introductionthe pontiac g5 is a good-looking front-wheel-drive coupe that delivers satisfying straight-line performance and reasonable fuel economy. the g5 comes in a standard version and as a sportier gt. The ride is a bit firm but not uncomfortable. with any coupe, interior space and passenger capacity are compromised for sporty styling and that's the case here. Pontiac describes the g5 as a five-passenger car, but limited rear legroom makes carrying five adults a serious challenge. The back of the cabin is best used for parcels. underneath the g5 are the same mechanical underpinnings from the chevrolet cobalt coupe that was introduced in 2005. Standard equipment has been upgraded: 2008 g5 models come with head-curtain airbags, a tire-pressure monitor, and xm satellite radio. Onstar and stabilitrak are now standard on the gt. lineupthe 2008 pontiac g5 is available only as a coupe, which means slick styling but only two doors and a smallish back seat. Xm satellite radio is standard. The standard suspension, which gm calls fe1, is tuned for a smooth ride. The gt also adds cruise control, foglamps, onstar, a seven-speaker stereo, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel, and a chrome-tipped exhaust. A cigarette lighter and ashtray are also available 35). safety features include frontal air bags, and front seat belts with pretensioners (in a crash these remove the slack). Anti-lock brakes (abs), standard on gt and optional on the base model, can help drivers avoid accidents by allowing them to maintain control of the steering at maximum braking effort. Abs is well worth the price. the onstar service available on the 2008 g5 includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, which makes crash data available to participating 911 centers, to help them dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. Also available is onstar's vehicle diagnostics notification system that allows subscribers to receive free monthly reports via e-mail. Each diagnostic report provides information on the remaining life of the engine oil, as well as tire pressures and checks on the engine and transmission, emissions controls, braking systems, and air bags. walkaroundwith its twin grille nostrils separated by an arrowhead-like divider, there is no mistaking the g5 for anything but a pontiac. Pontiac has steadily and consistently nurtured and developed this design theme since 1961, and now it is surely one of the most, if not the most, recognizable motif in the u. Auto industry. from the front, side or rear the g5 has a cleaner and smoother look than some pontiacs of the recent past, which tended to be cluttered with stick-on body cladding. There is plenty of legroom for two people up front. The driver's seat is adjustable for height. However, it seems to work better for raising short drivers than it does lowering down to add headroom for taller folks. The problem is that when the seat is lowered all the way to accommodate a tall driver, the seat cushion tilts a bit forward. all the controls are easy to find and use but there is a shortage of storage bins and trays. the back seat is barely suitable for a six-foot adult for a short trip across town. It is an excellent location, however, for parcels. like many coupes, which favor a low roof as they go for a streamlined look, the g5 has somewhat narrow windows. Some people like that because it makes them feel as secure as a turtle in a shell. Others find it is slightly confining. One problem is poor visibility over the driver's left shoulder. Big roof pillars and a small rear window combine to make it hard to see vehicles coming up to pass. we applaud pontiac's decision to make side air curtains standard. In a crash these cover the side windows, front and back, to provide head protection in a side-impact. Some studies have shown such head protection greatly increases the chance of survival and, when the national highway traffic safety administration conducted side-impact crash tests on an older g5 without the air curtains, officials noted that serious head injuries for the driver would have been likely. When a second g5 with the air curtains was tested there was a big improvement, although the pontiac still did not fare as well as a 2007 honda civic coupe (which has air curtains as standard equipment). onstar is a nice security blanket. This option combines a global positioning system and a cellular telephone (far more powerful than a hand-held cell phone) to put the driver in contact with an onstar center which is manned 24/7. In case of a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags the system will automatically call the center so help can be sent even if the occupants are incapacitated. we liked the optional sunroof. On some cars the sunroof tends to scoop outside air and funnel it into the vehicle as if attempting to duplicate the tornado from the wizard of oz. That is not the case with the g5. There is so little turbulence it is possible to open the sunroof on a 20-degree day and enjoy the sunlight without freezing, with the heater turned up. the trunk is rated at 13. 9 cubic feet which is competitive in this segment. The rear seat can be folded down for carrying more cargo. driving impressionas with most sporty cars, the ride in the pontiac g5 gt is somewhat firm, but encounters with potholes and tar strips do not result in any serious discomfort. The ride is comfortable enough for day-to-day commuting even in the midwest where the roads are rough. the steering is somewhat heavy and the effort increases during turns. The steering is tight, however. The car begins to respond. The g5 gt feels secure and fairly responsive on gentle or sweeping turns. Major competitors, like the civic, now come with five-speed automatics, and their extra gear means a better chance at providing good acceleration at all times and better fuel economy as well. The best fuel economy comes from the base g5 with a manual, at 24/33 city/highway mpg. the brakes feel great. The pedal was firm, but it was easy to slow the g5 either a little or a lot. Also, the front of the g5 didn't dip too much under hard braking. That gives it a balanced, secure feel. the summer performance tires avail.
